If you’re not familiar with International Women's Day, it’s a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Being an advocate for empowering women to take control of their health in menopause, I’m on fire when it comes to parity in women’s healthcare.

The good news is, women’s health is becoming a hot topic.

And for good reason – there’s a lot of us, and we hold 40% of global wealth. We also control 80% of healthcare spending.

Modern clinics, apps, devices and programs are taking on women’s healthcare globally.

We are starting businesses and walking the talk when it comes to inequality in women’s healthcare…and it’s not just in reproductive health.

If you're a research and data junkie like me, I’m a fan of CB Insights' 2018 report on How Technology is Transforming Women’s Health. It's filled with hope for women of all ages.

But we can do better.

Research on us still lags behind men's. And often, women’s health concerns get dismissed as being in our heads.

My go-to on this topic is Women’s Health Access Matters (WHAM), which highlights the gaps in research funding for brain health, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders and cancer.

Looking through the stats is sobering. I mean, cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women in the US, yet only 1/3 of the participants in clinical trials are female.

Harassment of women in healthcare is rampant.

On March 1, 2019, Time’s Up Healthcare launched to bring awareness and justice to a largely ignored industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 80% of healthcare workers are women, but only 11% of hospital CEOs are female, and 0 women serve as a CEO of a Fortune 500 healthcare company. In addition to advocating for victims of sexual harassment, Time’s Up Healthcare is trying to increase the number of women in these top leadership roles to improve work environments.

Closer to home, less than 7% of women in menopause receive the treatment they need.

Gennev is working to change that.

We're improving access to menopause physicians and nurse practitioners with our telemed consultation service, we're bringing original expert advice via our blogs and podcasts, we offer safe, effective products for symptom relief, and our menopause assessment brings personal insights to where you're at in the journey.

Even more, we’re working with experts in brain health and cardiovascular disease to educate women on lifestyle changes they should be making now – in menopause – that can mitigate these chronic diseases. Not to mention the benefit that hormone replace therapies (HRT) can bring to both.

One year from now, I’m going to report back on the progress we can celebrate in women’s health equality.

Until then, I hope you take control of your own health by talking to a practitioner to discuss the things that are impacting your quality of life.
