Our Philosophy

How we think about weight management:

Sustainable Changes

Being in a changing body is hard, and making a behavior change can feel even harder. We focus on sustainable changes that fit your lifestyle to improve your fitness and nutritional status.

Lifestyle and Medication

Managing weight through a combination of lifestyle change and medication (where appropriate) can have a greater improvement on your long-term health. We prescribe GLP-1s and other medications.

Comprehensive Counseling

We believe that women deserve comprehensive counseling on the risks and benefits of weight loss medications and long-term outcomes from the use of these medications.

Clinical Care model

Doctors and dietitians work together to provide menopause relief

Health coaching only gets you so far. Gennev is a unique clinical care model that gives you access to care from menopause-trained doctors and RDNs. Convenient video appointments are available within two weeks, with times available outside typical work hours.

Weight Management FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Rather than focusing just on dropping a few pounds, we offer support that considers you as a whole person, including your personal goals and your unique metabolic needs, as well as your long-term health. By focusing on weight management, we look to set realistic and sustainable goals that can be maintained for the long-term.

The treatment pathway cost depends on your individual treatment plan. This will be discussed in your intake appointment.

We’re covered by most Aetna, Anthem and UnitedHealthcare plans. That means that some or all of your appointments may be applied toward your deductible. If you are out of network, our self-pay fees range from $119-250, depending on the visit type and clinician. See the chart above for the self-pay costs for the different appointment types.

Your initial appointment with a registered dietitian allows us to fully assess your unique needs, and understand what strategies you may have tried before. Our dietitian team is uniquely qualified and trained in both menopause and weight management and can start you on a healthy, successful path. Prior to meeting with you, your doctor will review what you discussed with your dietitian to get a comprehensive picture of your needs, allowing them to dive straight into counseling on the medical aspects of weight management, including medications, if appropriate.

The initial dietitian appointment is an opportunity for you to share your weight management concerns, questions and goals in a safe non-judgmental place. Based on this discussion, your dietitian will provide feedback, suggest a plan and support you as you start on your path.

We know you can get weight loss medication in a lot of places. But to sustain the weight and metabolic changes these medications support beyond a few months, working with a dietitian and doctor is best. This collaborative approach also allows us to check in frequently with you if we start medications to assess for side effects and assess if the medication is working.

We will make an assessment of your current health risks and needs. If we feel that you would be better served with an in-person bariatric program with additional support, we will tell you and refer you to a program. We may also determine that you are medically too complex for our program and refer you to an in-person program.

We do not treat diabetes.

We are able to prescribe any medications that do not contain controlled substances, including GLP-1 agonists (WegovyTM and ZepboundTM). We will work with you to find the best medication for your unique needs.

Our doctors and dietitians work together to determine the best course of action for you personally. We will take into account what you have tried previously, your height and weight, and your goals. Medication may be prescribed if appropriate, but we do not guarantee a prescription if it’s medically not indicated.

We start by checking your cholesterol, testing for diabetes and ordering basic metabolic labs. These help us to best tailor your treatment and speak to risks and benefits.

Your appointments might be covered by insurance if we are in-network with your plan. If we are not, we can provide a “superbill” for you to claim out-of-network benefits and obtain reimbursement. The medications we may prescribe may be covered by your insurance—many are—if you meet criteria for weight loss care, which is usually based on weight, height and other medical criteria. Certain medications (GLP-1 agonists for example) are not covered by all insurances. We will do our best to help you obtain coverage, but will also discuss alternatives if this is not affordable.

While compounded medications can be less costly, they are unauthorized generics being produced in other countries. Because international compounds aren’t regulated by the FDA, this means they are not tested and may not be a safe option. The Obesity Society and the Obesity Medicine Association do not recommend the use of compounded GLP-1s.

This depends on many factors, including your unique health history, your metabolism and which medications, if any, you might use. While we know from studies that weight loss is slower in menopause, we also know our collaborative approach of lifestyle and medication offers the greatest opportunity for long-term success.

Please reach out to us at support@gennev.com and we can discuss your unique situation.

Yes, this program is different from our menopause offerings and there are a lot more intake questions and labs to be done. The doctor visit specifically focuses on weight management medications and their risks and benefits, which we do not cover in other visit types. In addition, the doctor you see for weight loss might be different from the one you see for menopause.
